Determine the precise measurements for whomever you will be sewing for. This includes measurements for:

• Height
• Chest/bust
• Waist
• Back waist length (This is the measurement is from the base of the neck to the waist)
• Hips

Men’s measurements should also include:

• Pant length
• Neck
• Sleeve length
• Inseam

Make sure you write these measurements down and take them with you when you go shopping for patterns.

Take your time browsing pattern books. Make sure you understand the difficulty level of the patterns you may choose. Choose the proper size using the measurements you brought along with you.

The pattern you have chose will give you information about how much fabric you will need to complete the garment. It will also provide some suggestions as to the best fabric time for the piece.

The pattern will also provide you a list of any additional items that will be need for the garment. This will include thread, buttons, zippers and so on. These notions should be chosen after you have decided on the fabric, so you can make the correct matching color choices.

Make sure you also pick up any basic sewing supplies that you may need, including pins, needles, scissors, fabric chalk and so on.

When paired with other pieces or accessories, you will find your wardrobe greatly expanded.

Fashion shows are put on so clothing designers can display their new styles. To put on a successful fashion show, it will take months of planning. You will also need models and a team of experts to produce the show. However, for smaller fashion shows such as for an amateur designer, you can put your own show.

The first thing you will need to do is choose a theme for your show. The theme will determine the types of clothing you will be displaying and the audience that is watching. The next thing you will need to do is find the right place to put on the show. You will probably want to do this at least three months or more in advance.

After you have picked the place and the theme, you will then need to hire a team. When choosing how many people you will need on the team, determine how many clothing changes the models will need. Once you have that figured out, that will determine how many people you will need for makeup, dressers, stylists, etc.

You will then need sponsors for the show and a guest list. Send invitations to people such as the media, models, fashion editors, etc. Do not wait until the last minute to send the invitations. Often the hurried shopper will see a garment they like, select their usual size and then head home. Thinking it is too time consuming to try on the garment at the store, they skip this step but in reality this should not be done. The main reason is because it will actually take more time if you have to return to the store because it does not fit properly. Because sizes can vary from one designer to another and also with various fabrics, it is far better to take two or three sizes into a dressing room and see which one works the best. Don’t get caught up in what size the tag says – nobody sees the tag but you.

You can also save time by knowing what you are shopping for. Just as with grocery shopping, you’ll save time if you make a list. Not only will this keep you focused but will cut down on impulse purchases.

Finally, since you know you will be spending a fair amount of time in dressing rooms, be sure to dress accordingly. Choose clothes and shoes that are easily removed. When in the dressing room, take the time to view the look on you carefully. What looks good from the front just might not look good from the back.
